Description and uses:

Dragon fruit, also called pitaya, is a cactus native to Central America.
This cactus, which looks like Virginia creepers, was imported to Vietnam by French settlers at the beginning of the 19th century.
Initially, the fruits were reserved for the royal family and then for the local bourgeoisie.
Its flower is relatively large, white in color.

Its fruit measures around ten centimeters and weighs around 350 grams.
There are three kinds of fruits from as many distinct species, all edible, and bearing a thick skin with small leaves.
Pitaya flowers and fruits will only begin to form after the second or even third year.
Plants on sale are self-fertile, the flesh is white.
There is also the much rarer yellow pitaya and the red/pink fleshed pitaya.

Traditional medicine of the Central American Indians attributes astonishing digestive properties to pitaya.
