More info

Bird's eye chili or pili-pili pepper is a very small chili pepper.
There are around 2,500 different species of chili peppers in the world.
Its fruit is small, measuring 4 to 5 cm in length.
Its yellow seeds are particularly small compared to other varieties of peppers.

In the past, these small peppers were found in abundance in sugar cane fields.
The birds ate the peppers and threw the seeds into their droppings.
It is probably from this form of dispersal that its name bird pepper appeared.
In Reunion, pili-pili pepper is used in many culinary preparations.

On the Scoville scale, this pepper has a strength of 8, which makes it particularly hot.
It is as hot as the cayenne pepper but less hot than habanero pepper.

The ideal time to sow bird's eye chili seeds is around the middle of May when temperatures are warm enough.

Start by soaking the seeds for 12 hours in lukewarm water before planting to break dormancy.
Then, prepare a pot of seedling soil, then scatter the seeds on top and bury them under 2 to 3 millimeters of substrate.
Water the crop thoroughly then place it under a germination greenhouse at a temperature close to 30°C.

The germination of this variety is relatively long, allowing 4 to 5 weeks on average after sowing.
Once germinated, transplant the pili-pili plants in a full sun location.
