Description

Fabiana imbricata, also known as false heath or pichi, is a small shrub belonging to the Solanaceae family. It is native to South America, specifically Chile.

It possesses dense and aromatic foliage composed of small, linear, narrow, and thick leaves. These grayish-green leaves are arranged in an imbricated (overlapping) manner, which gives the plant a bushy appearance and a strong resistance to drought.

Its flowers are shaped like small trumpets and are violet in color. They appear in clusters or panicles, bringing a delicate and bright touch to the plant, especially during the flowering period.

The fruits are small dry capsules containing tiny seeds. Once ripe, they open to release the seeds, allowing the plant to reproduce in its natural environment.

Fabiana seeds are small and brown.

- Uses:

This shrub is regularly used as incense during Native American ethnic ceremonies. The Aymara people of northern Chile use the dried leaves as a body purifier. Another method consists of using the fresh leaves in infusions for their therapeutic properties.
Do not consume for psychoactive or medicinal effects; cultivate solely for the preservation of the botanical species.

- Germination and Sowing of Seeds:

  • The most favorable period to sow Pichi is during the month of May.
  • Sow the seeds in a tray using a mixture of fine potting soil and sand.
  • Cover them very lightly with the same substrate.
  • Water the culture using a hand sprayer.
  • Place it in a location where the temperature is at least 25°C.
  • Germination will begin within 3 to 5 weeks after sowing.

- Soil Type / Substrate:

It thrives very well in well-drained, sandy, or granitic soil that is poor in nutrients. A light substrate, slightly acidic to neutral, is ideal for promoting its growth.

- Exposure / Sunlight:

This plant loves full-sun locations, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. It also tolerates partial shade, but its flowering will be less abundant.

- Temperatures / Hardiness:

False heath is hardy in regions where winter temperatures do not drop below -5°C. It prefers a hot and dry climate, tolerating hot summers of up to 35°C and relatively mild winters.

- Watering / Water Requirements:

It has low water needs, being adapted to arid environments. Moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry between applications, is sufficient to keep the plant healthy.

- Multiplication:

Multiplication is mainly carried out by seeds or by semi-ripe stem cuttings. Cuttings are ideally taken in summer and placed in a sandy substrate.

- Pests / Diseases:

Fabiana is not very sensitive to pests and diseases. However, it can be affected by aphid or scale insect attacks, especially in cases of over-watering or poor aeration.
