Spanish Flag vine, also known as firecracker vine or Ipomoea lobata (formerly Mina lobata), is a stunning perennial climber from the Convolvulaceae family. This vine, featuring the colors of the Spanish flag, blooms abundantly from July to October and can reach up to 5 meters in height by the end of the year. It is native to South America and is known for its very rapid growth.
Its leaves are alternate, heart-shaped or slightly lobed, with a velvety texture that gives them a lush appearance. They are typically bright green, adding a beautiful touch of greenery to any garden.
The flowers are particularly remarkable, appearing in terminal clusters that form elongated, tubular inflorescences. The flowers bloom progressively during the summer, shifting through a palette of colors from red to orange and finally to yellow. This gradient creates a captivating visual effect, especially during full bloom.
Firecracker vine seeds are brown, round, and small, measuring only 3 millimeters in diameter and weighing just a few centigrams.
A spectacular ornamental beauty, the Fire Vine is often grown in gardens and green spaces. Its colorful flowers, which transition from red to yellow and white as they age, make it an attractive plant for vertical surfaces, trellises, and fences. This color transition on the same inflorescence resembles the feathers of an indigenous headdress.
Easy to grow, it is an excellent plant for quickly covering supports and creating an immediate decorative effect while providing continuous color throughout much of summer and autumn.
It prefers a light, well-draining substrate. A mix of potting soil, compost, and perlite or sand works well, preferably with the addition of humus-rich soil. A slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal.
This plant like bright light. It thrives in full sun or partial shade. Direct sunlight for several hours a day promotes abundant and spectacular flowering.
It develops well in temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. This "flaming" Ipomoea is not cold-hardy and will not survive freezing temperatures. It is advisable to bring it indoors or protect it during cold nights, especially in winter.
Water regularly during the spring and summer growth period, but avoid excess water. The soil should remain moist but never waterlogged. In winter, as the plant enters dormancy, significantly reduce irrigation.
It can be multiplied by seed or by stem cuttings. For cuttings, choose a healthy semi-woody or herbaceous stem (approx. 15-20 cm), remove the lower leaves, and place it in water until roots appear.
A balanced fertilizer may be used during the growing season to encourage vigorous growth. Prune away dry or dead branches as needed.
