More info

White Bryony or Bryonia cretica is a perennial herbaceous plant.
It is part of the Cucurbitaceae family.
It is a climbing plant that usually grows in hedges and produces red and black berries.
Its root is fleshy and strongly purgative.
Its flowers are white and develop in spring.
White Bryony seeds are very round and brown in color, like those of common sage.

It is a plant whose root is poisonous.
It contains saponin in all its parts, but especially in its root and fruits, just like soapwort or black nightshade.

It has been used in popular medicine for its therapeutic virtues.
Ingesting parts of the plant including berries and roots causes vomiting and diarrhea.
This turnip has traditionally been used to treat many ailments in the same way as Bambusa arundinacea or Harpagophytum.
Today it is mainly used in homeopathy.

The sowing period for white bryony seeds begins at the end of April until the beginning of June.

Sow the seeds in a tray or large pot of horticultural soil.
Bury the seeds 1/2 cm deep then gently water the crop.
Finally, place the pots or tray in a greenhouse at a temperature between 20 to 25°C.
Germination will generally begin 3 to 4 weeks after sowing.
