Description

Aztec tobacco, Mapacho, or sacred tobacco, also known as Nicotiana rustica in Latin, is a hardy annual herb measuring 60 to 80 cm in height. It originates primarily from Central America (Mexico, Venezuela) and belongs to the large Solanaceae family.

The deciduous leaves are alternate, simple, oval to lanceolate, and may have slightly wavy edges. Their surface is often rough and lightly covered with small hairs. Its sticky foliage contains resin and alkaloids, notably nicotine.

Its flowers are among its most distinctive features. They are often tubular, with a five-lobed corolla, generally yellow and green in color. The flowers cluster in panicles and attract many pollinators. Flowering typically takes place from June to October.

Mapacho tobacco seeds are brown, round in shape, and measure an average of 1 to 2 millimeters in diameter. These seeds are light and can be easily dispersed by the wind or by animals.

- Uses:

It is a shamanic herb cultivated during the pre-Columbian period in Mexico and Venezuela. The Aztecs dried the leaves, crushed them, and blended them to use the mixture during religious rituals. It allowed shamans to develop heightened senses.

Some shamans also chewed the leaves. The Warao ethnic group of Venezuela used the leaves as blunts during shamanic rituals.

- Seeds Germination and Sowing:

  • The period for sowing sacred tobacco begins at the end of May.
  • Sprinkle the seeds onto the substrate without covering them.
  • Gently spray water over the top.
  • If possible, place the culture in a greenhouse in a warm and humid spot at a temperature near 25°C.
  • Germination will generally begin 2 to 3 weeks after sowing.

- Soil Type:

It grows very quickly in well-drained soil rich in organic matter. A mixture of garden soil and compost is suitable. Remember to drain the bottom of the pot with clay pebbles.

- Exposure:

It loves sunny environments. Direct exposure to the sun for at least 6 hours a day is ideal for achieving a good production of leaves and flowers.

- Cultivation Temperatures:

It grows very well in warm temperatures. It develops best when temperatures are between 18 and 30°C. This variety is frost-sensitive; therefore, it is preferable to harvest it before the first autumn frost. Its USDA hardiness zone is 10.

- Multiplication and Reproduction:

The only way to reproduce it effectively is by sowing; unfortunately, it cannot be grown from cuttings.
