Christmas melon or melon piel de sapo is an annual herbaceous plant native to Africa.
It belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family.
Its flowers are yellow, the size of those of the exploding cucumber.
It is a creeping plant that spreads quickly.
Its seeds are fine, orange and resemble those of horned melon.

It is widely cultivated for its edible fruit.
The term also refers to the fruit itself which is very tasty, sweet and fragrant.
It is called “piel de sapo” or frog skin because its skin is rough like that of a frog.
It is frequently cultivated in Spain, it is found from June until mid-December for the later ones.
This melon is green on the outside and white-yellow on the inside when it is fully ripe.

The most favorable time to sow Christmas melon seeds is at the end of April.
Bury the seeds 1/2 cm deep and place the crop in a greenhouse at a temperature of at least 25°C.
For cultivation directly in the garden, plant 2 to 3 seeds (in order to select the best plant) every meter because the melon tends to spread.
It appreciates a warm, sunny location and soil rich in organic matter.
The ripe white-fleshed fruits are eaten raw, either as a starter or as a dessert.
