Sweet flag, calamus or Acorus calamus is an aquatic plant of the family Acoraceae.
It is a herbaceous plant 50 to 120 cm tall.
It is grown in swampy areas in northern Asia.
Flowering of sweet flag are May to August.
Calamus seeds are yellow, they look like of purple coneflower.

Only the rhizomes of Acorus calamus are used in traditional medicine.
Roots of sweet flag are harvested in spring and autumn and then dried in the shade.
The scented acorus is a bitter tonic that stimulates the digestive glands.

Used in herbal tea, calamus and savory or horehound is effective against all stomach disorders such as bloating and nausea.
It is also an aperitif plant, it is possible to make a liquor. (watch out for alcohol abuse!)

In Canada, where the plant is called Belle-Angelique by Quebeckers, some Indians chew rhizomes for their stimulating and therapeutic properties.

Sowing of sweet flag seeds:

Place your calamus seeds in a box of damp sand, cover them with one or two millimeters of sand and laminate them for 4 weeks in the refrigerator or directly outdoors in winter.
