Harpagophytum procumbens or Devil's Claw is a perennial herb of the family Pedaliaceae.
Its main root has an important deep vertical development.
It is a tropical plant of Africa with caudex as baobabdesert rose or ponytail palm.
Secondary roots are sometimes huge bulbous tubers, weighing up to 1.5 kg.
Its fruits are garnished with sharp hooks which serve to transport them by the animal's coat.
