Turmeric or Indian saffron is a perennial herbaceous plant from the ginger family.
It is native to southern Asia.
It is widely cultivated in India but also, to a lesser extent, in China, Taiwan, Japan, Burma, Indonesia and Africa.
Turmeric seeds are brown and resemble those of ginger.
Its flowering is magnificent and very original.

The rhizome of dried and powdered turmeric is used as a spice and is commonly used in spice blends in Indian cuisine, particularly curry.
To prepare the powder, you must boil the rhizome, remove its skin, dry it in the sun, then reduce it to powder.

This plant was also widely used as an orange-yellow dye.
For the saffron costume of sadhus or Buddhist monks for example.

The rhizome is used as a traditional medicine and in Indian Ayurvedic medicine.

The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, is the subject of active research.
